Laura Davenport with Greystone Manor Springers helped me a lot. We were not near each other so we did not compete. She was in New York and I was in California! We were both around the same age and bred rode horses too. I could ask her anything, and she never got into the gossip. She told me breed the best quality you can. Too many mediocre animals are in shelters She is the reason we donate to shelters and Helen Woodward close to home. She is missed by so many! Bethany her daughter has continued the fantastic springer lines and is doing a great job.
If you plan on breeding dogs, showing, or both, look for a reputable mentor. One that shares your values, example:
Has lots of experience, knows how to groom for the shows, knows what the judges are looking for, and can direct you to obedience training classes near you. Pick a mentor that is honest and does not break the contracts they write. They can help you with the business end and help you though the challenges that you come across.
When breeding the dogs they will teach you what to do when the moms need help. Like opening the bag right away when the mom doesn't and how to clean the nasal passages, shots, worming, tail docking and dew claws, etc.
I learned about puppy nutrition, worming and shots from John at Appalachian Kennels in Kentucky.
I have been breeding the English Springer Spaniels now for 20 years. I have gotten away from the field type and do the bench type only because California customers have smaller yards and want a nice family dog that everyone will Oooo and Awwww!
